The Counterpane Book in Original Box, Byron May :Sowerby Millicent
6 Byron May :Sowerby Millicent The Counterpane Book in Original Box
London Humphrey Milford Oxford University Press 1913 Original Wraps Very Good Millicent Sowerby
Paper covers with a quilt effect onlay to the front, bound with a green ribbon. Small format 6.5 x 5" with approximately 50 pages. Each text page bordered with a design of pieces of cloth and sewing equipment. Colour frontis and 6 full page illustrations in black and white, all by Millicent Sowerby. Book is in very good condition, previous owner's name and date on front free endpaper, some minor browning/foxing but in remarkably good condition. Housed in the original protective box which is rather crushed, with tears and missing segments from the sides. It has, however, done a wonderful job of protecting the book. Robin and Joyce and their mother are dreadfully poor. They have hardly any fire by day, and at night when they go to bed, they shiver and shake. Joyce realises that their mother will soon become ill if she is always so cold, so she and her brother go out wool-gathering. They pick off all the fluff the sheep have left on brambles and briars. They search through every field for miles and collect every tiniest bit of wool. Gathering wool is a long, slow process, and it is already November! Then Robin has a very good idea, from now on they will collect all the feathers dropped by every hen, duck and bird. They also set about begging and borrowing every last piece of cloth they can find and eventually make a fine quilt. Of course, there is intrigue and adventures both before and after the quilt is finished. 12256
